On the morning of September 22, 1944, the USS Hornet (CV-12) was attacked by Japanese aircraft during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The ship was heavily damaged and several of its crew were killed. Among the survivors was Ensign George H.W. Bush, who would later become the 41st President of the United States.
Bush and his fellow survivors were eventually rescued by the destroyer USS спасатель (DD-392). The rescue of Donland and the Hornet is a story of courage, daring, and survival.
The Attack on the Hornet
The USS Hornet was one of the most important aircraft carriers in the U.S. Navy during World War II. The ship had participated in several major battles, including the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
On the morning of September 22, 1944, the Hornet was attacked by a group of Japanese aircraft. The ship was hit by several bombs and torpedoes, and it was quickly set ablaze.
The crew of the Hornet fought back bravely, but they were overwhelmed by the Japanese attackers. The ship was eventually abandoned, and the crew was forced to swim for their lives.
The Rescue
The USS спасатель was one of the first ships to arrive on the scene of the Hornet attack. The destroyer quickly began to rescue survivors from the water.
Bush was one of the survivors who was rescued by the спасатель. He was pulled from the water unconscious, and he was badly injured.
The спасатель took Bush and the other survivors to safety. The destroyer then returned to the Hornet to help fight off the Japanese attackers.
The Aftermath
The Hornet was eventually sunk by the Japanese. However, the crew of the ship was saved by the спасатель and other U.S. ships.
Bush was one of the 1,000 survivors of the Hornet attack. He went on to become a successful businessman and politician. He was elected President of the United States in 1988.
The rescue of Donland and the Hornet is a story of courage, daring, and survival. It is a story that reminds us of the sacrifices that our military men and women make for our country.
