Early Life and Education

Dorian Olivier Gabriel was born on March 7, 1879, in Marseille, France. His father was a merchant, and his mother was a musician. Gabriel began studying music at an early age, and by the time he was 10 years old, he was already playing the organ at his local church. In 1895, Gabriel entered the Paris Conservatory, where he studied organ with Alexandre Guilmant and composition with Gabriel Fauré. Career

After graduating from the Conservatory, Gabriel began his career as a concert organist. He toured throughout Europe, and his performances were praised for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity. In addition to his concert career, Gabriel also taught organ at the Schola Cantorum de Paris from 1904 to 1914. In 1914, Gabriel was appointed organist at the Madeleine Church in Paris, a position he held until his death in 1953.

Gabriel's organ works are considered to be among the most significant contributions to the organ repertoire of the 20th century. His music is characterized by its rich harmonies, complex rhythms, and expressive melodies. Gabriel was also a master of counterpoint, and his organ works often feature intricate fugal passages.
