Michael Norman Wodehouse, fondly known as Mike, was born on July 6, 1901, in Hong Kong, to Ernest Albert Wodehouse and Helen Gabrielle Emily (née Way). He was the younger brother of legendary humorist and author, Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, known as P.G. Wodehouse.

Early Life and Education

Mike grew up in a literary household, surrounded by books and a passion for storytelling. His father was a high-ranking civil servant in the Hong Kong government, while his mother was a talented pianist. Mike inherited his father's gift for language and his mother's love of music.

Mike received his education at Dulwich College in England, where he excelled in academics and developed a strong interest in theater. He was particularly drawn to the works of Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw, which influenced his later writing style.

Collaboration with P.G. Wodehouse

After completing his education, Mike joined his brother, P.G., in New York City, where they began collaborating on writing plays. Their first successful collaboration was the 1929 Broadway play "Leave It to Psmith," which introduced the iconic character Bertie Wooster.

Mike played a crucial role in developing Bertie Wooster's character. P.G. had initially conceived Bertie as a bumbling idiot, but Mike suggested that he be given a more endearing quality. He argued that Bertie should be lovable despite his flaws, and this suggestion profoundly shaped the character's enduring appeal.

The Jeeves and Wooster Series

The success of "Leave It to Psmith" led to the creation of the Jeeves and Wooster series, one of the most beloved and enduring comedy franchises in literature. Mike collaborated with P.G. on the first three novels in the series: "Thank You, Jeeves" (1934),"Right Ho, Jeeves" (1934),and "The Code of the Woosters" (1938).

Mike's contributions to the series went beyond developing Bertie Wooster's character. He also played a significant role in crafting the dialogue and refining the storylines. His sharp wit and keen sense of humor helped elevate the series to its legendary status.

Military Service

During World War II, Mike put his writing career on hold to serve in the British Army. He rose to the rank of Captain and saw active duty in North Africa and Italy. His wartime experiences provided him with a wealth of material for his later writing.

Post-War Career

After the war, Mike continued to write plays and novels, often collaborating with his brother. He also became involved in journalism and broadcasting. In 1949, he wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of "Thank You, Jeeves," starring Arthur Treacher as Jeeves and Basil Radford as Wooster.

Mike's post-war work often explored themes of nostalgia, regret, and the changing world. His writing was characterized by its wit, charm, and a deep understanding of human nature.

Personal Life

Mike Wodehouse married Lois Marguerite Angell in 1933, and they had two daughters, Patricia and Hilary. The couple lived in both England and the United States throughout their lives.

Mike was a devoted husband and father, and he cherished his family above all else. He was also a loyal friend and mentor to many aspiring writers.

Legacy

Mike Little Brother Wodehouse played a pivotal role in the creation of Bertie Wooster, one of the most beloved characters in English literature. His contributions to the Jeeves and Wooster series are immeasurable, and he left an enduring mark on the world of comedy and humor.

Mike's writing continues to entertain and inspire readers worldwide. His books and plays are a testament to his wit, charm, and deep understanding of human nature. He is remembered as one of the great humorists of the 20th century, and his legacy will continue to live on for generations to come.

Mike Wodehouse passed away on September 13, 1987, at the age of 86. He is buried alongside his beloved wife, Lois, at St. Andrew's Church in Old Headington, Oxfordshire, England.
