His passion for education led him to the prestigious University of Ibadan, where he earned a degree in Classics. After graduation, Oyebanji pursued a career in law, but fate had other plans in store for him.

The Road to Braking Day

In the years leading up to 1967, Nigeria was facing political turmoil and ethnic tensions. The country had recently gained independence from British colonial rule, and various factions were vying for power.

Amidst this political upheaval, Oyebanji emerged as a respected civil servant within the Nigerian Police Force. His reputation for integrity and impartiality made him an ideal candidate for the delicate task that lay ahead.

The Fateful Braking Day

On the morning of May 27, 1967, a military coup d'état was unfolding in Lagos, the capital of Nigeria. The coup leaders, led by General Yakubu Gowon, were seeking to overthrow the civilian government led by Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.

As the situation spiraled out of control, Oyebanji, then a Superintendent of Police, was tasked with ensuring the safety of Balewa and his cabinet members. With time running out, Oyebanji made a fateful decision.

The Courage to Stand Up

As the coup plotters approached the Prime Minister's residence, Oyebanji ordered his men to block their path. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Oyebanji stood firm, refusing to let the coup leaders pass.

His unwavering resistance gave Bawewa and his cabinet time to flee to a safe location, effectively foiling the coup attempt. The nation was saved from further bloodshed, and Oyebanji's brave actions earned him the title "the Savior of the Nation."

The Aftermath of Braking Day

The foiled coup d'état led to the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War, a bloody conflict that lasted for three years. Oyebanji continued to serve with distinction during the war, rising to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

После войны Oyebanji played a key role in the reconciliation and rebuilding of Nigeria. He served as the head of the Nigerian Police Force from 1975 to 1979, and his leadership helped to restore stability and unity to the country.

A Legacy of National Service

Adam Oyebanji's "Braking Day" heroics cemented his place in Nigerian history. He became a symbol of courage, determination, and the selfless service of one's nation.

In recognition of his contributions, Oyebanji received numerous awards and honors, including the prestigious Order of the Federal Republic (OFR). He passed away in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of patriotism and national service that continues to inspire generations of Nigerians.

Adam Oyebanji's "Braking Day" was a defining moment in Nigerian history. His courageous actions prevented a potentially catastrophic coup d'état, saved the lives of key political leaders, and ultimately paved the way for the rebuilding of a nation.

Oyebanji's story serves as a testament to the power of one individual to make a difference. It is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, courage, integrity, and selflessness can prevail.
