The Anglo-Saxon Era

The Anglo-Saxons were a Germanic people who settled in Britain during the 5th and 6th centuries CE. They established several kingdoms, including Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria. Over time, Wessex became the dominant kingdom, and its king, Athelstan, was crowned the first King of England in 927.

The Anglo-Saxon period was a time of great cultural and political development in England. The Anglo-Saxons developed a written language, established a legal system, and built many churches and monasteries.

The Norman Conquest

In 1066, the Anglo-Saxon era came to an end with the Norman Conquest. The Normans were a group of Vikings who had settled in Normandy, France. They were led by William the Conqueror, who claimed the English throne after the death of King Edward the Confessor.

William's claim was disputed by Harold Godwinson, the Earl of Wessex. Harold was elected king by the English Witenagemot, or council of advisors. William invaded England in September 1066, and the two armies met at the Battle of Hastings on October 14.

The Battle of Hastings

The Battle of Hastings was a decisive victory for the Normans. Harold Godwinson was killed in the battle, and William the Conqueror became the first Norman king of England.

The Norman Conquest had a profound impact on English society. The Normans introduced a new feudal system, which gave them control over much of the land in England. They also imposed their own laws and customs, and replaced the Anglo-Saxon language with French as the official language of the court.

Legacy of the Anglo-Saxons

Although the Anglo-Saxon era ended in 1066, the Anglo-Saxons left a lasting legacy on English society. Many of our modern laws, institutions, and traditions can be traced back to the Anglo-Saxon period.

The Anglo-Saxons were a great people who made many significant contributions to English history. Their legacy continues to impact our lives today.
